Kyoto PV: Jake

“I’m sorry to just burst in, but I’m pretty bored and there’s no way in hell I’ll wait until you stop being busy doing apparently nothing at all.”

“There is a reason why I selected a specific time for you to come. Also, you are not sorry at all... I have to do something in less than ten minutes. Can you please return at the time I told you yesterday?” the president said with a serious face.

“The time you told me yesterday is almost two hours from now. You must be out of your mind if you think I’ll wait two more hours doing nothing here. You won’t even let me stay in HQ while you do whatever you’re doing, right?”

“It is just one hour and a half… and I will not, indeed, because I am making use of the installations as you could probably realize when you came in and saw me sitting here, writing stuff,” he said, waving some cardboard cards with his hand.

“And yet you’re now standing… Maybe you can write that two hours from now? I’ve heard it’ll be a lovely afternoon to write, wouldn’t want to ruin it by being with me at the time.”

The President sighed. He sat down and pointed to the chair in front of the desk.

“Just sit down so we can talk about this.”

“Two hours!”, I said.

“It was just one and a half!”

He had organized HQ’s furniture to look like a police questioning room, just two chairs and a lamp on the desk. The table was moved to the side, next to the bookcase, and the other chairs were stacked up next to it.

“As you know, I will go soon—”

“We all know that, you can get to the point, I thought you were in a hurry.”

“—I will go, and I have to decide who is going to replace my position. ”

“Will you keep commanding stuff using Elysium?”

“I will, but Headquarters needs a new president.”

“Sounds pretty good, can I go home now?”

“As I said… I am looking for a new president, that is why I am talking to you now.”

“Well, that ghost seems to be the one you’d choose.”

“Actually I am not so sure… wait, so are you not interested?”

“You’d never choose me. Even if I seem to be the best option because you could get info directly everyday, you know I don’t care much about this. In fact I have a fight later today and I think it’s easy to see this meeting means ‘wasting my time for a pretty much useless conversation’ to me… Can you tell me why you called me here today? Why in two hours from now?”

“I just told you… and by now it is closer to one hour than two!” he said, but then he must have given up and just wanted to end the conversation. “I did not want to go home alone tonight, it gets boring to walk alone in the dark…”

So that was why. I’ll never understand why people try to hide the obvious.

“It’s that dog, isn’t it?”

“I have no idea of what are you talking about, ” he said while looking away.

He had the full idea of what I was talking about, but he would never admit he was afraid of a dog.

“The dog outside the shop at… you know what? I’ll see you at Sanjo Station when you go home.”

He seemed happy with this, so I got ready to leave the room.

“Wait!”

“What is it now?” I was already midway to the door.

“Is it still ‘an eye for an eye’ if you pull out your enemy’s opposite eye from the one taken from you?”

“What the hell does that even mean?”

“I mean, you know the expression ‘an eye for an eye’, what I am asking is...” but maybe he realized it meant nothing, because he sighed again and pointed to the door.

He didn’t have to insist. Quick as the wind, I ran to freedom.
